Ordinary People Change the World

Well, we are week three of homeschool this week and to say we have it down to a science would be a lie. However, I am enjoying the slow start to our mornings every day and being able to adjust our learning to what is going on in the season, the day, the weather etc.
Jake has always loved books and as a family we have always read books to each other, read books silently together, and even listened to books online. Since Jake has been doing school at home, every day we pick a new person from the Ordinary People Change the World series and read it together.

The series is a set of hardcover picture books, each book designated to an ordinary person, who, with hard work, changed the world in some sort of capacity. There are sports heroes, civil rights leaders, famous musicians, scientists, humanitarians, inventors and many others. The series is written by Brad Meltzer and each story is told from the ordinary person’s perspective. Each book is filled with information but presented in an engaging, colourful and inviting manner. There are even comic strip like pages in the book which my son loves.

Funny story - Jake chose to read about Albert Einstein a few days ago and loved that Albert discovered so many new things. Jake observed that Albert worked at a desk a lot and immediately after finishing the book, he said he wanted to build a desk in his room so he could “work at it”. Already I can see Jake’s mind being creatively challenged through these books which I love.

The newest title in the series is all about Leonardo Da Vinci and is released today, April 14th in honour of the 20th book in the series. Brad originally created the series to “give his own children heroes of character, kindness, and compassion.” He did not want his children to think that someone who is “famous for being famous on social media” constitutes someone to emulate. I am Leonardo Da Vinci is a wonderful story celebrating the artist’s creative talent and inspired children of all ages to create!

If you are looking for a series to start with your own family, I promise your entire family will enjoy reading these books. They are packed with information and wrote in a beautiful way that celebrates the heart of many famous heroes.
